The Message They Were Never Meant to Read

 The rain had almost stopped.

Tiny droplets still clung to the umbrella as they stood beneath the dim glow of the streetlamp, neither willing to be the first to step away. The message lingered on both screens like an unwelcome guest.

"If you're where I think you are... leave now. It's not too late."

Neither spoke.

One finally slipped the phone back into a pocket, forcing a faint smile.

"Probably someone with the wrong number."

The explanation sounded reasonable.

Too reasonable.

The other nodded, though neither of them truly believed it.

Instead of saying goodbye, they began walking again. Without discussing it, they chose the quieter streets where the city lights reflected across the wet pavement. The silence between them had changed. It was no longer awkward. It was filled with unanswered questions.

"I don't usually trust coincidences," one finally admitted.

"Neither do I."

Another silence followed.

"So... how did the same message reach both of us at exactly the same time?"

No answer came.

They stopped outside a small bookstore whose windows had long gone dark. The reflection in the glass showed two figures standing close together beneath a single umbrella.

Then, for just a heartbeat, a third silhouette appeared behind them.

Both turned immediately.

The sidewalk was empty.

Only the distant sound of rainwater trickling into a storm drain disturbed the night.

"It must have been our reflection."

"Maybe."

Neither sounded convinced.

As they continued walking, the city slowly became quieter. The cafés were closed. The traffic had almost disappeared. Their footsteps echoed through the narrow streets with surprising clarity.

Then another phone vibrated.

This time, only one.

A new message appeared.

"Don't look behind you."

The words sent a chill through the air.

Without thinking, both of them froze.

Curiosity fought against instinct.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

One began to turn.

A hand gently caught the sleeve.

"Don't."

For several long seconds they remained perfectly still, listening.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No breathing.

Only silence.

Finally, they started walking again, a little faster now.

Neither of them looked back.

Not once.

When they reached the apartment building, the entrance light flickered before switching on.

One of them reached for the handle.

It was already unlocked.

"I locked it this morning."

The door creaked open.

The hallway was empty.

Warm.

Quiet.

Almost inviting.

Just before stepping inside, both phones vibrated one last time.

A single sentence appeared.

"One of you arrived alone."
